DAVID GENTLEMAN (b.1930) is one of the last polymath designer-painters to have been trained in the great tradition of the Design School at the Royal College of Art, the alma mater of many of his heroes – Eric Ravilious, Edward Bawden, Barnett Freeman and others – several of whom he was lucky enough to have as teachers. His diverse commissions as a freelance designer have ranged in scale from postage stamps to the vast mural on the underground station at Charing Cross, and have included newspaper advertising, poster design and book illustration.
My Town, Gentleman’s most recent book on London, was published to great acclaim in March 2020. Patrick Bourne & Co. were delighted to present a selling exhibition of Gentleman’s original London drawings, watercolours and wood engravings – from student days to the present – to coincide.
David Gentleman is represented by Patrick Bourne & Co.
