In this marvellously bold rendering of the southern Highlands Eric Robertson
introduces a heightened sense of reality to the majestic landscape surrounding the
mountain of Ben More. The painting is one of two Highland landscapes by the artist
on this scale; the other, Buachaille Etive Mhòr, is in the collection at Kelvingrove
Art Gallery in Glasgow. Characteristically, Robertson shows what was more or
less in front of him but it is reinterpreted in arrangement, scale and colouring. The
view is easterly showing the River Fillan and, beyond, Ben More, the highest of the
Crianlarich Hills. To the left is its lofty neighbour, Stob Binnein, with its summit
shrouded in cloud. A band of rainbow at the left of the composition and a window of
bright blue sky at the top add to the intensity of the scene.
