For London Art Week 2023, Patrick Bourne & Co are exhibiting a group of works by Winifred Nicholson which highlight her lifelong fascination with colour and its emotive power.
Moving between Cumberland, London and Paris, Winifred Nicholson was very much involved in the avant-garde in the 20s and 30s. In London she was a member of the Seven & Five Society and Circle; in Paris, Constantin Brancusi and Piet Mondrian were among her friends. She was a colourist of exquisite refinement, and Kettle’s Yard founder Jim Ede credited her specifically for teaching him 'much about the fusing of art and daily living’.
Amongst the works shown by Patrick Bourne & Co is a portrait of the artist’s husband Ben (Nicholson) with Slinky, their border collie, painted in 1927. Another portrait of Ben Nicholson by Winifred in which he is pictured sitting at a breakfast table with their son, Jake, was sold by Patrick Bourne & Co to The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge in 2021.
