10 - 18 November | open Monday to Friday 10 am - 5:30 pm | Patrick Bourne & Co., 6 St James's Place, London, SW1
David Gentleman first went to India in the 1960s to seek inspiration for his illustrations for The Jungle Book, published by the Limited Editions Club in 1968. The country made a lasting impression on him, drawing him back in the early 1990s for a nine-month journey in preparation for his book David Gentleman’s India, published in 1994. He would return several times in the 2000s. Now in his 97th year and no longer able to travel, India remains the country he says he would most like to return to, were he free to choose anywhere in the world.
This exhibition includes work from both periods of travel, and features subjects as rich and diverse as the elaborately sculpted temples of Khajuraho, the misty Himalayan foothills around Shimla and the endlessly varied theatre of Indian railway life. It offers a rare opportunity to acquire many previously unseen works by one of Britain’s most admired and versatile artists and designers.
